Floodlight Installation at Brightwell Tennis Club, Farnham

JHP Electrical upgraded Brightwell Tennis Club with high-performance LED floodlights across five courts—boosting playability, energy efficiency, and safety. Built to LTA standards, the system supports extended use and a top-tier playing experience.

Background information

Brightwell Tennis Club has served the Farnham community for over a century. Originally based in Brightwell Gardens, the club moved to a brand-new facility at the nearby Riverside site —owned by Waverley Borough Council — which officially opened in 2015. The new facility features five floodlit outdoor tennis courts and a modern clubhouse.

As an LTA Tennismark-accredited venue, the club offers free access for members, coaching, competitive matches, and regular events for players of all ages and abilities.

JHP Electrical was appointed as the contractor for the design, planning, supply, and installation of high-performance LED floodlighting for the five tennis courts, aiming to preserve the club’s legacy while enhancing the quality of play, improving the overall member experience, and providing upgraded facilities for the local community.

Project overview

Working with the Brightwell Tennis Club Committee, JHP replaced the outdated metal halide fittings. The project was funded by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). The objective was to meet the LTA’s recommended lighting levels of 500 lux for outdoor courts — thereby supporting extended play, professional coaching, and competition-level visibility.

Scope of work included:

  • Removal of 20 existing metal halide fittings from current columns using height-access equipment.
  • Installation of 20 LED floodlights on 12 x 10-meter masts.
  • Integration of a photocell and programmable timeclock system for lighting automation and energy savings.
  • Replacement of 3 x 2D28 external emergency lights on the clubhouse with energy-efficient LED units.
  • Electrical testing compliant with BS 7671:2018 standards and issuance of a NICEIC Minor Works Certificate.
  • Drone-assisted pre- and post-installation lux level reporting to ensure precision, compliance, and performance.
  • Responsible site waste removal and environmental management.

Strategic approach

JHP Electricals’ approach combined technical excellence with environmental responsibility and client collaboration. Key strategic elements included:

  • High-Level Access & Safety: Safe removal and installation using a cherry picker and heavy-duty protective mats to prevent surface damage and ensure operator safety.
  • Smart Automation: Photocell and timeclock systems were implemented to automate lighting schedules, reducing manual effort and improving energy efficiency.
  • Precision Lighting Design: Floodlights were placed to ensure uniform light distribution, with drone-supported lux analysis confirming optimal performance across all five courts.
  • Sustainability Practices: Trade waste was responsibly managed, and LED upgrades reduced long-term energy use and carbon footprint.
  • Documentation & Testing: Thorough electrical testing ensured regulatory compliance. Client handover included operation manuals and system guides.

Results and achievements

  • Achieved an average of 500 lux lighting, meeting the LTA standards
  • Replaced outdated metal halide and emergency lights with energy-efficient LED solutions, reducing maintenance and operating costs.
  • Delivered a lighting system that supports longer playing hours, enhances safety, and improves overall visibility on the courts.
  • Drone-based lux reports provided data-backed validation of lighting performance and informed future planning.

Client satisfaction

Brightwell Tennis Club expressed high satisfaction with the quality of work, communication, and results. The club appreciated JHP Electricals’ professionalism, commitment to safety, and collaborative approach, particularly in tailoring solutions to meet LTA guidelines and the club’s needs.

Conclusion

The tennis court floodlighting installation at Brightwell Tennis Club exemplifies how technical expertise, modern lighting systems, and collaboration can transform a community sports facility. JHP Electricals’ role in designing and executing this project not only enhanced playability and energy efficiency but also reinforced the club’s position as an LTA-accredited venue.

JHP continues to uphold its commitment to excellence through quality installations, sustainability, and industry best practices — ensuring that tennis clubs like Brightwell can serve communities with pride and performance for generations to come.
