Previous Project:

Skate Park LED Upgrade in Tamworth, Staffordshire

As part of Tamworth Borough Council’s wider improvement programme, the skate park required a modern, energy‑efficient lighting upgrade to enhance safety, visibility, and usability during darker hours.

Background information

JHP Electrical—specialist electrical contractors and sports floodlighting experts—were commissioned by McArdle Sport Tec, a leading sports facility construction company, to deliver a full LED lighting upgrade at Tamworth Castle Pleasure Grounds, a popular community hub attracting skaters, families, and visitors throughout the year.  Importantly, JHP Electrical, McArdle Sport Tec, and lighting manufacturer Powerlite Fitzgerald are all members of SAPCA (Sports and Play Construction Association), ensuring the project was delivered to the highest industry standards.

Project overview

The lighting project focused on replacing outdated floodlighting with a high‑performance LED system designed to improve illumination levels, reduce energy consumption, and provide long‑term reliability for the skate park’s varied terrain.

Scope of Works

  • Removal of all existing floodlight fittings from columns
  • Supply and installation of 16 new LED floodlights, positioned in line with a detailed lighting design
  • Secure mounting, wiring, and connection of all luminaires for durability and long‑term performance
  • Precision aiming and alignment to achieve uniform lighting coverage across the skate park
  • Comprehensive on‑site lux level assessment using calibrated illuminance meters, ensuring compliance with CIBSE guidelines
  • Full testing, commissioning, and handover upon completion

This upgrade ensures the skate park remains safe, accessible, and compliant with modern lighting standards.

Strategic approach

JHP Electrical adopted a structured, quality‑driven approach to ensure the installation met both performance expectations and industry standards:

  • Collaborative planning with McArdle Sport Tec to align timelines and installation phases
  • Technical coordination with lighting supplier Powerlite Fitzgerald, ensuring the LED units delivered the required lux levels and beam distribution
  • Precision installation, with each luminaire carefully aligned to eliminate dark spots and maximise visibility
  • Rigorous testing and commissioning, verifying electrical safety, performance, and compliance before handover

The shared SAPCA membership across all key partners reinforced a unified commitment to best practice, safety, and quality.

Results and achievements

The LED upgrade delivered significant improvements across performance, sustainability, and user experience:

  • Enhanced lighting quality, providing uniform coverage across ramps, bowls, and open areas
  • Improved safety and visibility, supporting extended use during evenings and low‑light conditions
  • Reduced energy consumption, thanks to efficient LED technology
  • Long‑term reliability, with robust fittings designed for outdoor recreational environments
  • Full compliance with CIBSE lighting standards following detailed lux level assessments

The project was completed on time and within budget, meeting all client expectations.

Client satisfaction

Both McArdle Sport Tec and Tamworth Borough Council expressed complete satisfaction with the project delivery. JHP Electricals’ project team and on‑site engineers were praised for their professionalism, communication, and attention to detail.

The upgraded lighting has already improved the skate park’s usability, contributing to a safer and more enjoyable environment for residents and visitors.
