Claremont Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club Floodlighting Upgrade

Background information

Claremont Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club, in Cheshire, is a well-established club offering facilities for seasoned players and beginners. The club has four all-weather artificial grass courts, three of which were originally equipped with metal halide floodlights.

The existing lighting system, while functional, was becoming increasingly inefficient. The club’s management committee sought a solution to modernise its infrastructure and reduce long-term energy costs, while also aligning with the Lawn Tennis Association’s (LTA) recommended Lux lighting standards.

Project overview

To support the upgrade, JHP Electrical — members of SAPCA were appointed to replace outdated metal halide lighting with a new LED system, achieving LTA-recommended lighting levels for competitive and recreational play.

Scope of works included:

  • Removal of 12 metal halide floodlights using height access equipment.
  • Installation of 12 high-efficiency Legacy LED fittings, designed to deliver 400 lux using 12 x 600W units.
  • Replacement of existing flexible cables from the base of each mast to the luminaires.
  • Lux level testing to confirm compliance with LTA guidelines.

The lighting upgrade was tailored to suit the club’s existing infrastructure, with lighting posts positioned at the back corners of each court—four at each end—across 6-8 metre columns.

Strategic approach

JHP Electrical adopted a methodical and safety-conscious approach, focusing on both performance and sustainability. Key strategies included:

  • Precision Planning: Careful assessment of the court layout and mast positioning ensured optimal light distribution and coverage.
  • Height Access and Cable Management: All works were completed using safe height access techniques and robust cabling systems to ensure longevity and weather resistance.
  • Compliance with LTA Standards: Lighting levels were designed to meet the LTA’s recommended 400 lux in the total playing area, ensuring a professional playing experience.
  • Energy Efficiency: The transition to LED lighting significantly reduces ongoing electricity usage and maintenance costs.

Results and achievements

  • Replaced all 12 outdated metal halide fittings with 12 state-of-the-art LED units.
  • Achieved the target lighting levels of 400 lux, ensuring clear visibility and improved playing conditions.
  • Reduced the club’s energy consumption through the adoption of modern, low-maintenance LED technology.
  • Future-proofed the club’s lighting infrastructure in line with governing body sporting standards.

Client satisfaction

The Claremont Tennis Club Management Committee expressed high levels of satisfaction with both the process and results of the floodlighting upgrade. The project was delivered professionally, safely, and on schedule. The club now benefits from improved lighting quality, lower energy costs, and a more sustainable facility for members.

Conclusion

The successful lighting upgrade at Claremont Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club demonstrates the value of modern, efficient floodlighting in enhancing player experience and operational sustainability.

JHP Electricals’ expertise, strategic planning, and adherence to LTA standards ensured the club received a solution that supports its long-term goals and maintains its reputation as a welcoming and well-equipped venue for tennis enthusiasts of all levels.
